Nature Photography Workshop- Session I (Four Thursdays, April 17, 24, May 1, 8, 4-5:30pm)

This four-week photography workshop offers kids the opportunity to get out in nature, be creative, and have fun while capturing the beautiful landscape of Morris Arboretum during springtime! A lifelong photographer, Kim Soles will share her experience with photographing the natural world, while encouraging the young photographers to find his or her own way. Children will learn tips and techniques to hone their photography skills, concentrating on close-ups, textures, color, and landscape concepts. During the last session, students will have the opportunity to critique and celebrate their classmates' work. Children must have their own camera, know how to use it and make sure that it has been charged before arriving to class. Film cameras are welcome.
Sign up for one or both sessions - each session will offer new opportunities for students to experience and photograph different seasons in the garden!

Stroller Strides® (Six Wednesdays, April 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21, 28, 1:30-2:30pm)

This popular fitness class returns to Morris Arboretum this spring! Stroller Strides® is a total fitness program that moms can do with their babies - it includes power walking, strength-training intervals, and a unique blend of Pilates, barre, yoga, and stroller-based exercises designed to help moms build strength and muscle tone and improve posture. Taught by a certified and specially trained instructor (and fellow mom), it is a great workout for any level of exerciser. Jacqueline will weave songs and activities into the routine designed to entertain and engage baby, while moms are led through a series of exercises specific to her role as mom. You must be at least six weeks post-partum to participate in this series.

Join us for a 5 week session of special tot yoga, as we explore yoga together through nature-focused stories and songs. Class begins with circle-rhymes and centering warm-ups, then we move to a book with some songs sprinkled in, and finish with sweet relaxation! Come prepared to stretch and learn some fun poses with your little one. Bring your yoga mat if you have one, or a towel. If the weather permits, we can hold class outdoors!

The final session ends with a performance by the children for family and friends. This acting series builds children's confidence and creativity in a warm and welcoming environment under the tree canopy of our unique outdoor children's classroom.

Spring is a wonderful time for children to explore the great outdoors, and develop their intellectual curiosity while having fun in nature! Join us for a close look at trees, birds, and other wildlife that call the Morris Arboretum home. Each session will focus on a particular topic of the natural world, delving into how it fits into the Arboretum's web of life. One week we may get up close and personal with spring wildflowers, while another week we may learn about trees as the canopy closes and shades the forest floor; all within the safe confines of the Arboretum's trails. Then back inside, we will create a take-home art project related to our outdoor adventure.

In this one-time class, children will discover the rich birdlife at Morris Arboretum and use their findings to inspire creative art work! Our investigations will include a walk through the Arboretum to view birds in their habitats, both natural and fantastic. We will discuss strategies that will support our bird populations. The students will draw on-location and return to the classroom to paint from their investigations with acrylic paint on canvas board. Come dressed for the weather and to paint. All supplies will be provided.

Still Life and Portrait Nature Photography Workshop (Four Thursdays, May 22-June 12, 4-5:30pm)

This four-week photography workshop offers kids the opportunity to get out in nature, be creative, and have fun while capturing the Morris Arboretum landscape of during springtime! This second spring session will have a special focus on still life and portrait photography in nature. First, children will learn the basics of portrait photography, working with different lighting situations and learning to capture their subject surrounded in the beauty nature offers. A family member or friend will be invited to be photographed by the budding photographer. The instructor, Ms. Soles, will also photograph the student for a wonderful photo keepsake. The still life photography portion of the workshop will allow children the opportunity to create a still life in nature from gathered materials, as well as fruit and cut flowers. Children must have their own camera, know how to use it and make sure that it has been charged before arriving to class. Film cameras are welcome.

Mini-Morris Players (Four Thursdays, July 10, 17, 24, 31, 6:30-7:45pm)

In this fun-filled theater program, children create short outdoor plays incorporating their garden surroundings into the story. With simple props and costumes the young performers become the trees, shrubs, flowers, streams, and animals, celebrating the natural beauty and history of the Morris Arboretum.
In the first hour of this interactive program, children will learn their parts in a unique and engaging story. At 7:30 p.m., the program will culminate with the children performing the play for their families. The program will take place at different locations each week. On one Thursday, the Mini-Morris Players may perform at the Fernery, as the story of this unique building is told. On other evenings they will be at the Rose Garden, the Swan Pond or other scenic spots.
This improvisational program builds children's confidence and creativity, and is marvelous way to enjoy a summer evening on the enchanting grounds of the Arboretum!
While the children are engaged in the program, parents and grandparents are invited to relax and take a stroll through the gardens.
